In the last issue of Life News, I wrote about “The Safe Cities”, noting some of the similarities and differences between the sanctuary cities of modern America, the cities of refuge of ancient Israel, and the twin safe cities of everlasting Christendom/Christianity, which are Jesus Christ himself and the New Jerusalem.
In that article, I noted that the American sanctuary cities have been set up to provide asylum for people who have entered the country illegally. These cities break the law of the land in order to help people who have broken the law of the land to continue to break the law of the land. In consequence, they endanger their own law-abiding citizens. They pervert both justice and mercy, and ultimately have nothing in common with the Israelite and Christian safe cities.
Shortly after the publication of my article, I read a report of the establishment of another American sanctuary city. But (apart from taking—and redeeming—the name) this new sanctuary city has nothing in common with the nation’s other sanctuary cities. Unlike those cities, this city does not offer sanctuary to wilful, unrepentant, repeat lawbreakers. Rather it seeks to provide protection for innocent persons under threat of arbitrary, violent death.
The city concerned is the City of Lubbock in Texas and the “fugitives” concerned are children threatened by abortion. Citizens and officials of Lubbock have declared their city to be a sanctuary city for the unborn.
Constituents of the city voted 62% to 38% in favour of an ordinance to outlaw abortion. If we may for convenience conflate residents with voters, then a whopping 155,000 of the city’s 250,000 residents supported the outlawing of abortion throughout the districts of the city, thereby making the city a safe haven for unborn children.
As reported in The Epoch Times on 3 May 2021, “Part of the ordinance reads: ‘It shall be unlawful for any person to procure or perform an abortion of any type and at any stage of pregnancy in the City of Lubbock, Texas.’ It also renders abortion ‘at all stages of pregnancy’ an ‘act of murder,’ with a medical exception.”*
A sanctuary city for the unborn! In this age of mass slaughter, just the thought of it is exhilarating!
